The free Hebrew level test, in short

This online test estimates your Hebrew level on the four levels of the elev ulpan: alef, bet, gimel and dalet. It is free, and you take it without an account. It asks 8 questions per level, starting at alef. With one mistake at most, it moves you up a level; otherwise it stops and suggests that level. The result is an estimate at elev, not an official level.

What the test checks

At each level, the same four kinds of question, with the words and situations of that level.

  • תמונה

    Words and pictures

Match everyday words to their pictures, and say what a photo shows.

  • דקדוק

    Grammar

Pick the right form: a verb in the past tense, an adjective that agrees.

  • קריאה

    Reading

Read a text message or a notice, and find the information.

  • האזנה

    Listening

Listen to a short dialogue, then answer two questions.

Four levels, from alef to dalet

The test goes up in this order and stops at the level to start at. Each level has a free chapter.

  1. Alef

The letters, their sounds and nikud (the vowel marks), then the present tense of the five binyanim and the past tense of pa’al. Alef also covers the alef plus programme.

  2. Bet

Each binyan in detail, in the past and the future, and how to recognise the binyan of a verb.

  3. Gimel

The passive: nifal, pual and hufal.

  4. Dalet

The full passive system, root and pattern, up to a full text.

How the test works

  1. Choose who it is for

You or your child: each track has its own test, with its own words and situations.

  2. Go up level by level

8 questions per level. With one mistake at most, you move up to the next level.

  3. Get your level, keep your answers

The test suggests a level. A free account keeps your answers and fully opens the free chapter of that level.

Is this a Hebrew proficiency test?

Not in the sense of a certified exam. It is a placement test: it tells you where to start in the elev ulpan, from your answers today. No ministry, school or other ulpan recognises the result. You can take it again at any time, and with a subscription you move up a level when you are ready.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Hebrew level test really free?

Yes. You take the whole test with no account and no card. A free account then keeps your answers.

I can’t read Hebrew yet. Can I take the test?

Yes. If the first questions stop you, the test suggests level alef, which starts with the letters, their shape and their sound.

Is my result an official level?

No. It estimates your level in the elev ulpan. It is not a certificate, and other ulpans do not recognise it.

How many questions are there?

8 per level, and four levels at most. The test stops as soon as it finds the level to start at: a beginner only answers the 8 questions of level alef.

Can my child take the test?

Yes, with the “My child” button: the young learners track has its own test, with situations from a child’s day, school and friends. It also starts at level alef.

What happens after the test?

The test takes you to the page of the suggested level. A free account keeps your answers and fully opens the free chapter of that level. The rest of the ulpan needs a subscription, by the month or for the year.
